GOVERNOR ZANDAMELA ATTENDS INAUGURATION OF LICHINGA METICAL SQUARE

Today, April 4, the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, Rogério Zandamela, and the Chairman of the Lichinga City Council, Luís Jumo, inaugurated the Metical Square in Lichinga.

This square was erected as part of a set of actions that the Banco de Moçambique has been undertaking, with a view to contributing towards the appreciation of the Metical, a symbol of our accomplishments, history and national identity.

During his speech at the event, the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique said that by inaugurating the Metical Square, the country's fourth, “we wish to promote our currency, the Metical, one of the most important symbols of our sovereignty and accomplishments, so I would like to reiterate my call for its appreciation and preservation”.

Moreover, Zandamela also mentioned that the Square had been erected at a former children's playground site, and this fact inspired the Bank to provide leisure spaces for children. “We are standing on this city's former children's playground. For we should recognize the value of recreation, in addition to green spaces, resting benches, and lighting lamps, there is a dedicated play area that should provide our children with moments of fun and leisure”, he clarified.

The Governor of the Banco de Moçambique has stated that he hopes that the Metical Square project brings about positive results for financial literacy one of the greatest commitments of the central bank, especially as to social responsibility: “We are convicted that this Square will help strengthen the process of financial education, locally and nationwide, since the Metical square project covers all country provinces”, he stressed.

Zandamela wrapped-up his speech by calling on the Lichinga city citizens to conserve and preserve the Square, which qualifies as a valuable local heritage site.

For his part, the Lichinga Mayor expressed his gratitude, especially for the Banco de Moçambique gifting the city's children with a dedicated play area, in what is dubbed the “the most beautiful and stunning Metical Square in the country”. Luís Jumo addressed words of appreciation to Governor Zandamela for the initiative's contribution towards furthering the beauty of Lichinga city. In his address, he committed to all within his powers to take care and preserve the space.

There were also moments of exchange of gifts, and the Governor gifted the Mayor with an appointment book and Metical acrylic, having received, in return, seven types of beans, given that Niassa is the greatest producer of this crop.
Central Bank Board Members, Felisberto Navalha and Silvina de Abreu, Directors, and Managers attended the event, as well as officers of the bank and that municipality.
