PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC SWEARS IN BENEDITA MARIA GUIMINO AS VICE-GOVERNOR OF THE BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE

Today (4 September), the President of the Republic, Daniel Francisco Chapo, swore in Benedita Maria Guimino as Vice-Governor of the Banco de Moçambique at the Great Hall of the Presidency of the Republic.

Speaking on the occasion, Daniel Chapo stated that the swearing-in of Benedita Maria Guimino was of singular historical significance, as she is the first woman to hold this position at the Banco de Moçambique, a strategic institution in the “economic and financial architecture of the country”.

According to Daniel Chapo, the appointment of Benedita Guimino to a position of such high responsibility and importance should inspire Mozambican girls and women to believe in their potential.

“Your appointment is not merely symbolic. It is the result of dedication and merit throughout your career and a clear demonstration that Mozambican women can aspire to the highest positions in the Mozambican State,” said Daniel Chapo.

Addressing Vice-Governor Benedita Guimino, the Head of State reiterated the need to promote greater financial inclusion, preserve the value of the national currency, the Metical, and strengthen coordination between monetary and fiscal policies, in order to contribute to the achievement of Mozambique’s economic independence.

In addition to these challenges, the Head of State set out two guidelines that should steer the work of the new leadership of the Banco de Moçambique.

“As I stated at the swearing-in of the Governor of the central bank, today I bring two guidelines: the first is the adoption of increasingly effective anti-money laundering mechanisms, to protect the integrity and reputation of the national financial system; and the second is to deepen the financial system so that it can enable the diversification of financial instruments that stimulate productive investment and have a tangible impact on the lives of the Mozambican people,” urged the Head of State.

Daniel Chapo also reiterated the importance of teamwork, strengthening unity and cohesion, and valuing the institution’s staff.

According to Daniel Chapo, the success of the Banco de Moçambique also depends on recognising that “behind interest rates and macroeconomic indicators lies the real economy, families and the Mozambican people, who are the true reason for the existence of the State,” adding that “the Central Bank, the State and the people expect commitment, responsibility, rigour and integrity from the new leadership”.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by members of the Government, members of the Board of Directors of the Banco de Moçambique and members of the Presidential Consultative Council.
