GOVERNOR ZANDAMELA ROLLS OUT 7TH EDITION OF THE BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE REGULATORY SANDBOX

Today (15), the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, Rogério Zandamela rolled out the 7th edition of the Banco de Moçambique Regulatory Sandbox at the building bearing the name of this fintech incubator.

In his remarks, Rogério Zandamela stated that, throughout its trajectory, the Regulatory Sandbox has established itself as a platform for promoting financial innovation aimed at fostering an increasingly sound, modern and inclusive financial system.

According to the Governor, the global financial sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasing digitalisation, instant payments and new forms of financial service delivery, all of which pose fresh challenges for regulation, security and consumer protection in relation to financial products and services.

Against this backdrop, Rogério Zandamela noted that Mozambique has taken important steps towards modernising payment infrastructures, particularly through the recent approval of the new National Payment System Law and the METIX platform, which enables the real-time receipt of bank transfers.

Addressing participants in the 7th edition of the Sandbox, whose technological proposals include solutions designed for visually impaired persons, the Governor called for full compliance with the Bank’s regulatory and licensing requirements, as well as responsible integration into the payments ecosystem. He further urged participants to be ambitious, yet prudent, in their activities, stressing that “confidence is the most important asset” throughout the entire process.

For his part, the Chairman of the Mozambican Fintech Association, João Gaspar, praised the progress achieved over time, noting that the first fintechs may migrate to SIMOrede, thereby reinforcing the objective of pursuing more integrated and inclusive solutions aimed at broader and more effective use of financial services, while ensuring alignment between the domestic financial ecosystem and international standards.

Invited to speak on behalf of the fintechs from the 6th edition, Oldemiro Baloi thanked the Bank for creating not only a testing environment, but also a platform for learning, growth and the maturation of innovative business models geared towards promoting more accessible, comprehensive and secure financial inclusion.

During the event, certificates of participation were awarded to the fintechs that completed the pilot tests under the 6th edition of the Banco de Moçambique Regulatory Sandbox.

The event was also attended by Board Members Jamal Omar and Benedita Guimino, Bank managers and staff members, the President of the Insurance Supervision Institute, Ester dos Santos José, the President of the Digital Transformation and Innovation Agency, Adilson dos Santos Gomes, and representatives of fintechs.
