Thursday, 17 April 2025

Today, April 17, the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, officially inaugurated the Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex in the Matutuíne district, Maputo Province.
In his address, President Chapo stated that the project aligns seamlessly with his vision of governance—centered on fostering fair, balanced, and citizen-centric development.
On the occasion, the Head of State emphasized that by constructing such a large-scale facility outside an urban center, the Banco de Moçambique has clearly demonstrated its commitment to being “a bank for all, a bank of the Mozambican people.”
President Chapo also expressed strong appreciation for the Bank’s initiative, highlighting the broader impact of the complementary actions associated with the project. These include the extension of the electricity grid by 10 kilometers, the expansion of mobile phone coverage, the drilling of five water boreholes, the hiring of local labor, the upgrade and extension of the access road to the complex, and the donation of furniture to local institutions. According to the President, these measures will stimulate the local economy, promote employment, and create income-generating opportunities—particularly for young people.
He further underscored the symbolic significance of the project, noting that this year marks “50 years of our independence, 50 years of the Banco de Moçambique, and 45 years of our currency, the Metical.” The President expressed his hope that the facility will serve as a platform for discovering new talent and as a showcase for both the country and the region.
Speaking at the event, the Governor of the Banco de Moçambique, Rogério Zandamela, remarked that the Sports Complex stands as undeniable proof of the central bank’s longstanding commitment, over its 50-year history, to promoting physical activity among its staff members as a means of enhancing their physical and intellectual development, as well as their overall well-being and that of their families.
According to Governor Zandamela, the complex is a holistic response to the need for sports and recreational services for the Bank’s employees. It also represents a challenge the institution set for itself in hosting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Central Banks Games at its own facilities, a commitment made in honor of its jubilee celebrations.
The Banco de Moçambique Sports Complex spans 30 hectares and features an integrated array of sports arenas, including two football fields, an athletics track, four multi-purpose courts for various sports, three tennis courts, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and a game room.
The event was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Caifadine Manasse; the Governor of Maputo Province, Manuel Tule; the Secretary of State for Maputo Province, Henrique Bongece; BM Executive Directors Jamal Omar and Silvina de Abreu; BM managers and employees, government officials, and other dignitaries.
