FINANCIAL INCLUSION INDICATORS - Q1 2025

The financial inclusion indicators for the first quarter of 2025, available here, present a detailed analysis of access to financial services in Mozambique, taking into account geographic, demographic, and usage dimensions, broken down by gender and area (urban and rural). The report also provides data on the distribution of access points across the country’s 154 districts.

During the reporting period, the total number of access points increased by 10.3%, driven by a 12% growth in mobile money agents and a 3% increase in microcredit operators between December 2024 and March 2025.

Key highlights include:

  • A continued (slight) upward trend in the number of mobile money accounts per 100 adults, reaching 110% in Q1 2025, up from 109% in Q4 2024. This figure suggests that some individuals hold more than one account. The increase reflects improved access to and usage of related services, along with nationwide customer outreach campaigns carried out by mobile money institutions;

  • A slight decrease in the number of bank accounts per 100 adults, from 33.0 to 32.3, a 2.2% drop, following revised projections of the adult population for 2025; and

  • An increase in deposits as a percentage of GDP by 1.3 percentage points, to 48.8%, while credit as a percentage of GDP remained stable at 17%.
