Friday, 03 October 2025

On Friday, 3 October, the Banco de Moçambique (BM) presented its Economic Outlook and Inflation Forecasts (CEPI) Report to the academic community at the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) in Lichinga. The event formed part of the activities commemorating the Bank’s jubilee and the regular dissemination of this report.
In his welcome remarks, Viegas Nhenge, Director of the Faculty of Forestry and Wildlife Resource Management at UCM-Lichinga, highlighted the importance of the event for the university community, noting that it would allow students to deepen their understanding of topics covered in class. He also underscored BM’s role in drafting policies that contribute to the country’s macroeconomic stability.
For his part, Jaime Manjate, Director of BM’s Communications Office, framed the event as part of the central bank’s efforts to promote economic education, with a particular focus on fostering understanding of the rationale behind monetary policy decisions.
During the presentation on monetary policy by Jorge Mouco, a specialist from the BM’s Economic Research Department (DEE), the MIMO rate was highlighted as the main instrument of monetary policy, along with the channels through which it is transmitted in the economy to ensure the Bank’s primary mandate of maintaining low and stable inflation.
Finally, Carlos Baptista, Director of the DEE, rendered a summary of the September CEPI report. He explained that the Monetary Policy Committee reviews macroeconomic developments, inflation forecasts, and associated risks and uncertainties every two months and makes decisions on the MIMO rate to ensure that inflation remains within a reasonable range consistent with the normal functioning of the economy.
The well-attended event brought together approximately 200 students from the Faculty of Forestry and Wildlife Resource Management, which includes the economics and management, as well as accounting and auditing programs. Faculty members from UCM-Lichinga, as well as BM managers and technical staff, were also in attendance.
