BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE PRESENTS THE ECONOMIC OUTLOOK AND INFLATION FORECASTS REPORT AT UNIVERSIDADE POLITÉCNICA

This Monday morning, April 3, the Banco de Moçambique presented the Economic Outlook and Inflation Forecasts Report (CEPI) to the academic community of Universidade Politécnica, in a session rather popular with the students of this University, which was represented by the Director of the Higher Institute of Management, Sciences and Technology, Inocente Mutimucuio, and managers of other organizational units.

The Banco de Moçambique was represented by the Head of the Economic Research Department, Pinho Ribeiro, responsible for presenting the report, the Head of the Communications Office, Emílio Rungo, which provided a backdrop regarding the framework of the communications strategy for monetary policy decisions, and the Head of the Markets and Reserves Management, Carlos Baptista. The delegation also comprised Assistant Technicians, Filimão Canda and Rachel Pombe, as well as other bank staff members.

For his part, Pinho Ribeiro explained that the monetary policy decisions issued by the Banco de Moçambique are underpinned by the assessment of the outlook at home and abroad, and mainly sets out to promote price stability. Its main instrument to fulfill this purpose is the Interbank Monetary Market Rate (MIMO) or MIMO rate, for short.

Following a detailed explanation of the monetary policy transmission method and domestic and international drivers assessed by the Monetary Policy Committee, in its session on March 29 this year, Ribeiro made known the decisions taken by the body and publicly announced on the same date.

In the heated discussion session that followed the presentation, students posed several questions, especially related to the impact of the increase in domestic public debt on inflation, high-interest rates and the mechanism for their formation by commercial banks.

While wrapping up, the Director of the Higher Institute of Management, Sciences and Technology of Universidade Politécnica, Inocente Mutimucuio, expressed his appreciation to the Banco de Moçambique for the initiative and found the event an important experience for the academic community.

Tomorrow, the Banco de Moçambique is set to present the CEPI at Wutivi University - UniTiva, Boane.
