Today, May 17, Banco de Moçambique held an International Symposium marking its 50th anniversary, under the theme “Credibility of Central Banks and Monetary Policy,” at the Mozambique-China Cultural Center in Maputo.
In his opening speech, Rogério Zandamela stated that credibility is not merely about reputation but is a strategic asset that enables central banks to anchor inflation expectations, promote financial system stability, and achieve monetary policy objectives with greater precision and impact.
“When a central bank is truly trustworthy, its statements are not merely announcements but signals that influence the behavior of households, markets, and institutions,” said Rogério Zandamela, who underscored that the Banco de Moçambique has consistently played a central role in shaping the country’s economic trajectory, even amid complex environments.
According to the Governor, credibility poses a challenge for central banks, as it requires an adequate legal framework, consistency, and transparency in action with a view to achieving the proposed objectives.
“Given that credibility is an extremely sensitive and critical issue, we decided to invite guests who could share their insights, knowledge, and experiences on how they have managed this challenge, providing valuable guidance to support us in the ongoing and demanding process of building the Banco de Moçambique’s credibility,” said Rogério Zandamela.
Speakers at the event were unanimous in considering credibility as an asset to the effectiveness of monetary policy, as it anchors the expectations of economic agents regarding inflation trends.
The symposium was attended by central bank governors, distinguished speakers of high professional and intellectual standing, representatives from national and international financial institutions, government officials, members of the Board of Directors, as well as managers and technical staff of the Bank.
